Blocks of small, pale blue font on a colored background is not good news if you're trying to read it. The same goes for red writing on black background or even white on black. You need to use plenty of white space on your page.
White space. Unless you're writing a long sales letter with testimonial boxes, different sets of bullet points and so on, it's best to have white space around your writing. Even with a long sales letter you might want to do this around, say, a long story you're telling within it. White is easy on the eye and causes less eye-strain. Many people don't like reading on their computer at the best of times, so make it as easy as you can for as many people as you can.
No distractions. White space is to your benefit in that there's nothing around the writing to distract the reader from your message. If they want to read it through you want to give people as clear a run at it as possible. Crowding it with ads, pop ups, a narrow space and anything else you can think of, will not help the reader to concentrate.
Looks clean. Compare a website with lots of white space and one without it and you'll see that just by first looking at it, it looks clean and well organized. On top of that the text stands out and, providing the font is black and it's big enough, it looks readable. That is, it looks like there will be no interruptions which simply irritate readers.
Center it. Keep the text down the center of the page. Have white space top, bottom, right and left. Frame your text in the white space as far as possible. Some people prefer to keep it to the left which is OK as long as the space is still there. Double spacing between words also creates ease for reading. If you combine that with a large enough font in black, then it looks inviting to read rather than a hurried experience. In fact, it makes it faster to read because concentration can be complete.
